CONTEXT
The Charlevoix Train is a tourist train connecting Côte-de-Beaupré to Charlevoix, from Montmorency Falls Park, to La Malbaie via Baie-Saint-Paul. It is known for its magnificent panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River.
Réseau Charlevoix, responsible for the Charlevoix Train, has taken on a number of challenges over time in order to ensure the sustainability of the train. Its efforts in terms of improving the offer, positioning, reputation and social acceptability are now bearing fruit, as it has never welcomed as many passengers as in the last two years.
It seems important to capitalize on this success to take the Charlevoix Train to another level. In order to demonstrate its development potential, Réseau Charlevoix asked Touriscope to conduct an opportunity study, in collaboration with the Firm Featuring.
APPROACH
A consultation in the form of interviews was conducted with numerous tourism stakeholders in the Capitale-Nationale region. This made it possible to identify projects that could positively or negatively influence Réseau Charlevoix, the opportunities to be seized for the development of the offer, the potential pitfalls and the conditions for success.
In addition, a comparable case study made it possible to analyze the offer of other tourist trains that have developed a model that meets the challenges of the local community, in line with the destination's tourism development vision. Among the trains studied are American Heritage Railways, West Highland Lines, and the Alpine Pearls Network.
Finally, a survey of interest in the Charlevoix train experience was conducted on the Quebec, Ontario and Northeastern American markets.
RESULTS
This approach has offered numerous advantages to Réseau Charlevoix. Above all, it confirmed the development potential of the offer and the relevance of positioning itself as a solution to various challenges experienced in the destination, especially in terms of accessibility. Thus, Réseau Charlevoix can now assert its role as a key tourism player in developing the attractiveness of the destination.
